On the occasion of the 11th SEAMEO RETRAC Governing Board Meeting, SEAMEO RETRAC organized an international conference on “Basic Education Curriculum Revisited: A Look at the Current Content and Reform” at the Institut Aminuddin Baki, in Genting Highlands, Malaysia, on August 27, 2008.

Attending the conference were SEAMEO RETRAC Board Members from Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and about 40 educational experts and educators from Malaysia. The main focus of the conference was a discussion about innovations and reforms in basic education curriculum in different countries in Southeast Asia.

The conference attracted the papers and presentations from representatives of the ten Southeast Asian countries mentioned above. These countries profiles provided the participants with an overview of their educational systems and the curriculum content. Furthermore, the conference also kept the participants updated with achievement and reform in basic education. Participants at the conference expressed their great interest in the topic through their active involvement in discussing, giving comments, and sharing ideas as well as experiences in initiating the improvement of basic education curriculum in their own respective context. They highly appreciated the conference though which they can gain a better understanding of educational systems and innovations in Southeast Asian countries.
