Training Workshop: Experience and Solutions of Southeast Asian Countries in Teaching Mathematics and Science in English

 

Responding to Vietnam’s National Foreign Languages 2020 Project’s objective to improve “Teaching and Learning in Foreign Languages within the National Education System”, SEAMEO RETRAC conducted a training workshop entitled; “Experiences and Solutions of Southeast Asian Countries in Teaching Mathematics and Science in English” held in Nha Trang City, Vietnam on 12-13 October, 2017.

The training workshop was a regional forum for experts, administrators and teachers from Vietnam and the region to share experiences and effective systems for teaching Mathematics and Science in English. The training workshop gathered over 100 participants from 40 Vietnamese provinces across the country and speakers from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the United Kingdom.

The workshop focused on critical issues; such as pre- and in-service training of and incentives for teachers; curriculum and teaching materials development; and student assessment. The workshop was a meaningful forum to enhance regional models for teaching Mathematics and Science in English, foster a diverse learning environment, and integrate subject content and necessary language skills. The workshop better equips educators with the skills they will need to prepare students for an ever-globalizing society.
