Dr. Gary Bonar

Senior Lecturer, Languages and TESOL, Monash University

Dr Gary Bonar is a Senior Lecturer in Languages and TESOL at the Faculty of Education, Monash University, Australia. His research focuses on English Medium of Instruction (EMI), with particular attention to teacher identity, agency, and multilingualism in international and transnational education contexts. He draws on extensive teaching experience in Asia, Europe, and Australia, including work with CLIL and EMI educators in both secondary and tertiary settings. Since 2019, Dr Bonar has led Monash University’s EMI professional learning program for Chinese university academics, delivering tailored professional learning for staff from leading institutions. He has also delivered EMI-focused professional learning and lectures in China, Japan, and Indonesia, including Dean’s Lectures in Beijing and Shanghai on the complexities of EMI in higher education. His scholarly work is published in top-tier international journals such as TESOL Quarterly, SYSTEM, Teaching and Teacher Education, Current Issues in Language Planning, and Foreign Language Annals. He currently serves on the editorial board of the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics and the advisory board of the international Bilingualism Matters network. His co-edited volume, Language Teacher Agency, which explores teacher voice and professional autonomy in language education, will be published by Bloomsbury in 2025.
