Background

Curtin is an innovative, global university known for its high-impact research, strong industry partnerships, and commitment to preparing graduates for the jobs of the future. With an expanding global footprint that includes locations in Western Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai, Mauritius and Sri Lanka, Curtin boasts a rich diversity of cultures among its students and staff, and a strong commitment to international engagement. In recent years, the University has established itself among the top one per cent of universities in the world (ARWU 2025).

Founded in 1966 and gaining university status in 1987, Curtin is now one of Australia’s largest universities, delivering education and research across five faculties — the Centre for Aboriginal Studies, and the Faculties of Business and Law, Health Sciences, Humanities, and Science and Engineering — with a long-standing commitment to Indigenous education and culture through the Centre for Aboriginal Studies. Beyond its main campus in Perth, Curtin operates a growing network of international campuses and partnerships across Asia and the Middle East, extending accessible, high-quality education across the Indian Ocean Rim and Southeast Asia. Curtin was also the first university in the world to offer the International Baccalaureate option at an undergraduate level.

Curtin offers a broad range of industry-aligned undergraduate and postgraduate courses in business, humanities, health, engineering and science, delivered on campus, online and in a variety of study modes. Select courses are also delivered through specialist regional locations, including the WA School of Mines in Kalgoorlie, which holds an international reputation for excellence in mining education and research.

Exposure to business and industry throughout their studies means Curtin graduates leave career-ready, equipped with the knowledge, skills and practical experience employers value most. Students also benefit from engaging with Curtin research that is making a genuine difference to industry and the community, both nationally and internationally.

Research

Areas of strength

Our research is broad in scope, encompassing a range of fields in science, engineering, health, society, business and more. Across all our research areas, we aim to strike a balance between demand-driven research, which solves defined problems for industry and society, and researcher-driven research, which is characterised by a desire to push the limits of understanding.

Curtin’s researchers hold national and international competitive grants across a wide range of disciplines, and the University’s work is consistently recognised for its real-world impact, translating research into outcomes for industry, government and communities across our regions of engagement.

In recent years, Curtin has risen rapidly up the international university rankings, and as an institution that never settles, continues to build new partnerships and strengthen existing ones across teaching, research and industry engagement.
